Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָיָה inf. absol, חָיֹה Ezekiel 18:9, and חָיוֹ 3:21 18:28 constr. with suff. חֲיוֹתָם Joshua 5:8 with prefix לִחְיוֹת Ezekiel 33:12 imp. with prefix וֶחְיֵה Genesis 20:7 pl. וִחְיוּ 42:18 fut. יִחְיֶה apoc. יְהִי, וַיְחִי.

(1) to live, a word of very frequent use. Arabic حَىَّ, which form is also found in Hebrew, see חָיַי. Eth. ሐይወ፡ Syr. ܚܝܐܳ id. The original idea of this word is that of breathing; inasmuch as the life of animate beings is discerned by their breathing (compare נֶפֶשׁ); and the more ancient form of this root is הָוָה, which see. The same original idea is found in the Greek ζάω, ζώω, cognate to which is ἄω, ἄημι, to breathe; which, in Æschylus, is applied to the winds as breathing or blowing. Those who are curious in languages may inquire whether the Sanscrit dschîv, to live; Greek βίοω; and Latin vivo; belong to the same stock.

[“Construed

(a) with acc. of time, Genesis 5:3, ‘and Adam lived a hundred and thirty years;’ Genesis 11:11, etc.

(b) with בְּ of place, Lamentations 4:20 also of that from which one lives, 2 Kings 4:7 and of that by which one lives and prospers, Habakkuk 2:4.”]

Followed by עַל, to live upon any thing, compare עַל No. 1, a, letter γ. Often i.q. to live well, to be prosperous, to flourish, Deuteronomy 8:1, 30:16 Nehemiah 9:29 [Qu. as to the use of this latter-cited passage]. יְחִי הַמֶּלֶךְ “may the king live,” may he prosper, 1 Samuel 10:24; 2 Samuel 16:16. יְחִי לְבַבְכֶם “let your heart live,” i.e. let it flourish, or be glad, Psalms 22:27, 69:33.

(2) to continue safe and sound, Joshua 6:17; Numbers 14:38 especially in the phrase חָֽיְתָה נַפְשִׁי “my soul liveth,” I remain alive, Genesis 12:13, 19:20 Isaiah 55:3; Jeremiah 38:17, 20 Jeremiah 38:20.

(3) to live again, to revive, Ezekiel 37:5, seq.; 1 Kings 17:22 hence

(4) to recover health, to be healed, Genesis 20:7; Joshua 5:8 followed by מִן from a disease, 2 Kings 1:2, 8:8 and to be refreshed (spoken of one wearied, or sad), Genesis 45:27; Judges 15:19.

Piel חִיָּה

(1) to cause to live, to make alive, to give life to some one, Job 33:4. A woman, when she conceives by a man, is said to vivify his seed, Genesis 19:32, 34 Genesis 19:34 similarly, Hosea 14:8, יְחַיּוּ דָגָן “they shall vivify the corn” in the desert land, by again cultivating the fields and scattering the seed. Metaph. Habakkuk 3:2, “O Jehovah, vivify thy work,” i.e. accomplish it. Also, to cause to be well, or to flourish, Psalms 119:37.

(2) to keep alive, compare Kal No. 2; Genesis 12:12; Exodus 1:17; Psalms 41:3, 138:7 Job 36:6 חִיָּה נֶפֶשׁ פ׳ id. 1 Kings 20:31; Psalms 22:30 חִיָּה זֶרַע to preserve seed, Genesis 7:3 חִיָּה בָקָר to feed oxen, Isaiah 7:21.

(3) to call back to life, to restore life, 1 Samuel 2:6; Psalms 30:4; Deuteronomy 32:39 hence, to refresh, Psalms 71:20, 85:7 and figuratively, to repair (a city), 1 Chronicles 11:8. Neh. 3:34, הַיְחַיּוּ אֶת־הָאֲבָנִים “will they call the stones to life?” So Syr. ܢܰܚܶܡ to raise up ruins.

Hiphil הֶחֱיָה

(1) i.q. Piel No. 2, to keep alive, Genesis 6:19, 20 with the addition of נֶפֶשׁ Genesis 19:19 to deliver from destruction of life, i.e. to save from death, Genesis 47:25, 50:20 followed by לְ Genesis 45:7 also, to suffer to live, to grant life, Joshua 6:25, 14:10 2 Samuel 8:2.

(2) i.q. Piel No. 3, to restore to life, 2 Kings 5:7, 8:1, 2 Kings 8:5. Hence מִחְיָה [and the pr.n. יְחִיאֵל, חִיאֵל, יְחִיָּה].
