Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about resting or sleeping.

Then Thomas, who was called the Twin,Didymus">[fn] said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too, so that we may die with him!"

As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."John 11:21;">[xr]

The dead man came out, his hands and feet tied with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus told them, "Untie him, and let him go."John 20:7;">[xr]

Now he did not say this on his own initiative. As high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

As a result, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews.[fn] Instead, he went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness. There he remained with his disciples.2 Chronicles 13:19; John 4:1,3; 7:1;">[xr]

Mary took a pound of very expensive perfume made of pure nard and anointed Jesus' feet. She wiped his feet with her hair, and the house became filled with the fragrance of the perfume.Luke 10:38-39; John 11:2;">[xr]

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, who was going to betray him, said,

At first his disciples didn't understand these things. However, when Jesus had been glorified, they remembered that these things had been written about him and that peoplethey">[fn] had done these things to him.Luke 18:34; John 7:39; 14:26;">[xr]

The one who loves his life will destroy it, and the one who hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.Matthew 10:39; 16:25; Mark 8:35; Luke 9:24; 17:33;">[xr]

Isaiah said this whenbecause">[fn] he saw his glory and spoke about him.Isaiah 6:1;">[xr]

And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me."

Now before the Passover Festival, Jesus realized that his hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.loved them completely">[fn]Matthew 26:2; John 12:23;">[xr]

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was returning to God,Matthew 11:27; 28:18; John 3:35; 8:42; 16:28; 17:2; Acts 2:36; 1 Corinthians 15:27; Hebrews 2:8;">[xr]

got up from the table, removed his outer robe, and took a towel and fastened it around his waist.Luke 22:27; Philippians 2:7-8;">[xr]

Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel that was tied around his waist.

Jesus told him, "The person who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is entirely clean. And you menyou (pl.)">[fn] are clean, though not all of you."John 15:3;">[xr]

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer robe, he sat down again and said to them, "Do you realize what I have done to you?

Truly, truly I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.Matthew 10:24; Luke 6:40; John 15:20;">[xr]

I'm not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: 'The one who ate bread with meate my bread">[fn] has lifted up his heel against[fn] me.'Psalm 41:9">[fn]Psalm 41:9; Matthew 26:23; John 13:21;">[xr]
