καταβάλλω: passive and middle present participle καταβαλλόμενος; 1 aorist passive κατεβλήθην; (from Homer down); the Sept. for הִפִּיל;

1. to cast down: τινα, passive, Revelation 12:10 Rec.; to throw to the ground, prostrate: passive, 2 Corinthians 4:9 (where the metaphor is taken from an athlete or combatant).

2. to put in a lower place: in the phrase θεμέλιον καταβάλλομαι, to lay (down) a foundation (Josephus, Antiquities 11, 4, 4; 15, 11, 3; Dionysius Halicarnassus, Antiquities 3, 69; others), Hebrews 6:1.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

καταβάλλω is used of a woman ";stricken"; with sickness in P Oxy VIII. 1121.9 (A.D. 295) νόσῳ κατα [β ]λ ̣[η ]θεῖσα. The classical meaning ";pay"; is common in the papyri of all periods, and especially so in Byzantine documents (cf. Ostr. i. p. 89) : see e.g. P Hib I. 29.6 (c. B.C. 265) καταβαλ [ὼν ] τὰ γινόμενα τέλη, ";on payment of the usual taxes,"; P Fay 12.22 (c. B.C. 103) καταβαλὼν διὰ Πτολεμαίου τραπαιζίτ [ου, ";paying through Ptolemaeus the banker,"; ib. 63.4 (A.D. 240) κατέβαλ (εν) εἰς τ [ὸν Ἀ ]ντωνίου Φιλοξένου. . . λόγον ";he paid into the account of Antonius Philoxenus,"; and so P Strass I. 6.2 (A.D. 255–61) : also P Eleph 3.2 (B.C. 284–3), ib 17.21 (B.C. 223–2), BGU IV. 1158.21 (B.C. 9), and P Petr II. 11(1).6 (iii/B.C.) cited s.v. δάνειον, and Syll 936.6 cited s.v. ἀνάγω.
