Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The verb is common in petitions, as P Tebt I. 42.5 (c. B.C. 114) ἠδικημένος καθ᾽ ὑπερβολὴν ὑπ [ ] Ἁρμιύσιος, P Eleph 27(a).25 (iii/B.C.) With cognate acc. (as in Colossians 3:25) BGU IV. 1138.13 (i/B.C.) ὃ ἠδίκησ ̣ε ̣ν ̣ ἐμαρτύρησ (εν). In the sense of harming something inanimate (Revelation 6:6; Revelation 7:2-3—the latter paralleled in Thucydides) see Syll 557.8 τὴν δὲ λοιπὴν χώραν τὴν ἱερὰν τοῦ Ἀπόλλωνος τοῦ Πτωΐου μὴ ἀδικεῖν μηδένα, and cf. BCH 1902, p. 217 : ἐάν τις τὴν στήλην ἀδικήσει, κεχολωμένον ἔχοιτο Μῆνα καταχθόνιον. The wider sense of ἀδικεῖν ";injure"; is well illustrated by Swete on Revelation 2:11.
