פָּנָה fut. יִפְנֶה, apoc. and conv. יִפֶן, וַיִּפֶן in the other persons, אֵפֶן, תֵּפֶן, נֵפֶן to turn; in one phrase, פָּנָה עֹרֶף to turn the back, see עֹרֶף letters a, b. Elsewhere, always intrans. to turn oneself.

(1) in order to go any where. Exodus 7:23, פַּרְעֹה וַיָּבאֹ וַיִּפֶן, 10:6 32:15 Genesis 18:22; Deuteronomy 9:15, 10:5 16:7 sometimes with the addition of a dat. pleon., Deuteronomy 1:40, 2:3 Joshua 22:4 hence

(c) Figuratively applied to time.

(α) to turn itself, to pass away. Jeremiah 6:4, פָּנָה מהיּוֹם “the day declines.” And poetically, Psalms 90:9, “our days decline.”

(β) to turn itself in coming, approaching, in the phrase, לִפְנוֹת הַבֹּקֶר when the morning draws on, at morning, Exodus 14:27; Judges 19:26; Psalms 46:6 לִפְנוֹת עֶרֶב when the evening draws on, at evening, Genesis 24:63; Deuteronomy 23:12.

(2) to turn oneself to look at any thing, Ecclesiastes 2:12, פָּנִיתִי אֲנִי לִרְאוֹת חָכְמָה “I turned myself to behold wisdom;” Exodus 2:12, וַיִּפֶן כֹּה וָכֹה וַיַּרְא “and he turned himself (with his eyes directed) hither and thither, and saw.” Hence to behold, to turn the eyes to any thing, followed by אֶל Exodus 16:10; Numbers 17:7; Job 21:5 בְּ Job 6:28; Ecclesiastes 2:11 followed by אַחֲרָיו (behind oneself), Judges 20:40; 2 Samuel 1:7, 2:20 לְמַעְלָה (upwards), Isaiah 8:21 Metaph. פָּנָה אֶל to regard a person or thing, Deuteronomy 9:27 especially used of God hearing and answering men, Psalms 25:16, פְּנֵה אֵלַי וְחָנֵּנִי Psalms 69:17, 86:16 also פָּנָה אֶל תְּפִלָּה Psalms 102:18; 1 Kings 8:28 אֶל הַמִּנְחָה Numbers 16:15; Malachi 2:13. Piel, prop. to cause to depart (see Kal No. 1, c): hence

(1) to remove, to take out of the way, Zephaniah 3:15.

(2) to clear from things in confusion, from things in the way, to put a house in order (aufräumen), Genesis 24:31; Leviticus 14:36 to clear a way, i.e. to prepare it, cast it up, Isaiah 40:3, 57:14 62:10 Malachi 3:1. Absol. Psalms 80:10, פִּנִּיתָ לְפָנֶיהָ “thou preparedst (way, or room) before it.”

Hiphil, fut. convers. וַיִּֽפֶן.

(1) trans. to turn, Judges 15:4, especially the neck, the back; used of one going away, fleeing, 1 Samuel 10:9 Jerem. 48:39. Hence

(2) without עֹרֶף intrans. to turn the back, to flee, Jeremiah 46:21, 49:24 also, to turn oneself back, to stop in flight, Jeremiah 46:5; Nahum 2:9. Followed by אֶל to turn oneself to any one, Jeremiah 47:3.

Hophal, to turn the back, Jeremiah 49:8 to look in any direction (see Kal No. 2, fin.), Ezekiel 9:2.
