He said to them, "But who do you say I am?"

So they said to Jesus, "We don't know." He in turn told them, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

Feeling deeply distressed, each one began to say to him, "Surely I am not the one, Lord?"

Then Judas, who was going to betray him, said, "Rabbi,Rabbi is Heb. for Master and/or Teacher.">[fn] I'm not the one, am I?" JesusHe">[fn] said to him, "You have said so."

Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was about to break out instead. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man'sthis righteous man's">[fn] blood. You must see to that yourselves."Deuteronomy 21:6;">[xr]

He trusts in God. Let Godhim">[fn] rescue him now if he cares for him. After all, he said, 'I am the Son of God,'"Psalm 22:8;">[xr]
