חָלַל

(1)  to perforate, pierce through (Arab. خَلَّ Conj. I. and V.), and intrans. to be pierced through, or wounded, Psalms 109:22. Hence הָלָל, חָלִיל, חַלָּה, חַלּוֹן, מְחִלָּה. Compare Piel and Poel.

(2) to loose, to lay open. (Arab. حَلَّ, nearly allied are the Gr. χαλάω, λύω). Comp. Piel, Hiphil.

Poal חוֹלֵל to wound, to pierce through. Isaiah 51:9, מְחוֹלֶלֶת תַּנִּין “who pierced through the dragon” (meaning Egypt). Pass. מְחוֹלָל wounded, Isaiah 53:5. LXX. ἐτραυματίσθη.

Niphal נִחַל (for נָחַל) inf. הֵחֵל (like הִמֵּס) fut. יֵחַל, תֵּחֵל pass. of Piel No. 3. b, to be profaned, to be defiled, Ezekiel 7:24, 20:9 14:22 Leviticus 21:4.

Hiphil הֵחֵל

(1) to loose, to set free. Hosea 8:10, וַיָּחֵלּוּ מְעַט מִמַּשָּׂא מֶלֶךְ “and they (the hostile nations) shall presently force them from the burden (i.e. the unpleasant dominion) of the king.”

(2) to break one’s word, Numbers 30:3.

(3) i.q. Piel No. 3, b, to profane, Ezekiel 39:7.

(4) to begin, of which the idea is derived from that of opening, like many synonymous words, e. g. פתח Arab. to open, to begin. Syr. ܫܪܐ to loose, to open, to begin. German eröffnen. It stands with an inf. followed by לְ Genesis 10:8 without לְ Deuteronomy 2:25, 31 1 Samuel 3:2 rarely followed by a finite verb, as Deuteronomy 2:24, הָחֵל רָשׁ. 1 Samuel 3:12, הָחֵל וְבַלֵּה “in beginning and finishing,” i.e. from the beginning to the end. Genesis 9:20, וַיָּחֶל נֹחַ אִישׁ הָאֲדָמָה “and Noah began (to be) a husbandman.”
