אָסַר future יֶאְסֹר and יֶאֱסֹר with suffix וַיַאַסְרֵהוּ, וַיַּאַסְרֻהוּ

(1)  to bind, to make fast, to bind to any thing, cognate to the root אָזַר and other verbs of binding which are collected under that root. (Ch. אֲסַר Syr. ܐܶܣܰܪ, Arab. أَسَرَ. Eth. አሰረ፡ and አሠረ፡ id.) Ex. gr. a beast of burden, Genesis 49:11 a sacrifice, Psalms 118:27 a sword to the thigh, Nehemiah 4:12 any one with cords, Ezekiel 3:25. Hence

(2) to bind, put in bonds, Genesis 42:24, viz. with fetters, Psal. 149:8 Jeremiah 40:1; 2 Kings 25:7. Part. אָסוּר bound, Psalms 146:7 metaph. used of a man taken with the love of a woman, Song of Solomon 7:6.

(3) to make captive, to hold in prison, although not bound, 2 Kings 17:4, 23:33. Part. אָסוּר a prisoner, Genesis 40:3, Genesis 40:5; Isaiah 49:9. בֵּית הָאֲסוּרִים “house of prisoners,” i.e. prison, Judges 16:21, 25 Judges 16:25 contr, בֵּית הָסוּרִים Ecclesiastes 4:14. (Arab. أَسَرَ id., أُسْرُ captivity.)

(4) to bind, or fasten animals to a vehicle. 1 Samuel 6:7, וַאֲסַרַתֶּס אֶת־הַפָּרוֹת בָּעֲגָלָה “and bind the kine to the cart;” verse 10 1 Samuel 6:10 either with an acc. of the vehicle, to harness a chariot, Genesis 46:29, or else absol. 1 Kings 18:44, אֱסֹר וָרֵר “bind (the chariot to the horses) and go down.”

(5) [“properly to bind on, to join, hence אָסַר אֶת־הַמִּלְחָמָה”], to join battle, den Streit anfädeln, mit jemandem anbinden, to begin the fight; 1 Kings 20:14; 2 Chronicles 13:3.

(6) אָסַר אִסָּר עַל־נַפְשׁוֹ to bind a bond, or prohibition upon oneself, i.e. to bind oneself with a vow of abstinence, promising to abstain from certain things otherwise permitted; Numbers 30:3, seq. It differs from נָדַר נֶדֶר, which is to vow to do or to perform something. (Ch. אֲסַר to prohibit, to forbid; Syr. ܐܣܪ ܘܫܪܐ to bind and to loose, also to prohibit and to permit.)
