Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָלָה fut. יַעֲלֶה.

(1)  to go up. (Arab. عَلاَ to be high, lifted up, also to go up. In the Indo-Germanic languages to the same family belongs the Latin root, alo (aufziehn); whence alesco (wachfen), altus, altare, and, with the breathing at the beginning of the word hardened, cello; whence celsus, excello, collis. As to the German roots, see Fulda, Germ. Wurzelwörter, § ccx. 2.) Constr. followed by עַל of place to which one ascends, Isaiah 14:14 אֶל Exodus 24:13, 15 Exodus 24:15, 18 Exodus 24:18, 34:4 לְ Isaiah 22:1 בְּ Psalms 24:3; Song of Solomon 7:9 followed by an acc. Genesis 49:4, כִּי עָלִיתָ מִשְׁכְּבֵי אָבִיךָ “because thou wentest up thy father’s couch;” Proverbs 21:22; Numbers 13:17; Judges 9:48. It is very often used in speaking of those who go from a lower region towards a higher; for instance, of those who go to Judæa from Egypt, Genesis 13:1, 44:24 Exodus 1:10 from the kingdom of the ten tribes, Isaiah 7:1, 1 Kings 12:27, 28 1 Kings 12:28, 15:17 Acts 15:2 from Assyria, Isaiah 36:1, 10 Isaiah 36:10 from Babylonia, Ezra 2:1; Nehemiah 7:6 from all countries (Zechariah 14:16, 17 Zechariah 14:17); also of those who go up to the sanctuary, Exodus 34:24; 1 Samuel 1:3, 10:3 (sanctuaries having anciently been built on high places, like monasteries, of which those who go thither are said in Syriac, to go up (ܣܠܰܩ), compare under the word בָּמָה No. 3, 4), who go to the city (cities having, in like manner, been built on mountains), 1 Samuel 9:11; Judges 8:8, 20:18, 31 Judges 20:31; Hosea 8:9 who go into the desert (which seems, like the sea, to rise before those who look at it), Job 6:18; Matthew 4:1 who go to a prince or judges (from their commonly residing in citadels), Numbers 16:12, 14 Numbers 16:14; Judges 4:5, 20:3 Ruth 4:1; Deuteronomy 17:8.

Inanimate things are also said to go up, as smoke, Genesis 19:28 (and even any thing which being burned turns to smoke, Judges 20:40 Jerem. 48:15 ); vapour, Genesis 2:6 the morning, Genesis 19:15, 32:25, 27 Genesis 32:27 anger (which is often compared to smoke), Psalms 18:9, 78:21, 31 Psalms 78:31; 2 Samuel 11:20 also, a way which goes upwards, Judges 20:31 a tract of rising ground, Joshua 16:1, 18:12 a lot which comes up out of the urn, Leviticus 16:9, 10 Leviticus 16:10; Joshua 18:11 a plant which sprouts forth and grows, Genesis 40:10, 41:22 Deuteronomy 29:22 (poet. used of men, Genesis 49:9); whence the part. עוֹלֶה Job 36:33 (a plant) sprouting forth; compare עָלֶה.

Like other verbs of going, flowing (see יָרַד, הָלַךְ ); poet. it is construed with an acc. of the thing, which goes up in great plenty, as though it all were changed into it; Proverbs 24:31, הִנֵּה עָלָה כֻלּוֹ קִמְּשׁוֹנִים “behold! it all (the field) went up thorns,” i.q. becomes thorns, like a house when burned turns to smoke, Isaiah 34:13, 5:6 Amos 8:8, 9:5.

(2) Metaph. to increase, to become strong (as a battle), 1 Kings 22:35 wealth, Deuteronomy 28:43 followed by עַל, to overcome, Proverbs 31:29. As to the phrase עָלָה עַל לֵב see עַל p. 628, A.

(3) A garment when put on is said to go up (see עַל No. 1, ), Leviticus 19:19 a razor when used for the head, Judges 16:17 a bandage, when applied to a wound (see אֲרוּכָה ); also things which are taken up, carried away (compare Hiph. No. 3), Job 5:26, 36:20 also things which come up into an account (compare Hiph. No. 3), 1 Chronicles 27:24.

Niphal (pass. of Hiph.).

(1) to be made to go up, i.e. to be brought up, Ezra 1:11.

(2) to be made to depart, to be driven away, Jeremiah 37:11; Numbers 16:24, 27 Numbers 16:27; 2 Samuel 2:27.

(3) to be elevated, exalted (used of God), Psalm 47:10 97:9.

Hiphil הֶעֱלָה (rarely הֵעֲלָה Habakkuk 1:15)

(1) to cause (any one, or any thing) to go up, e.g. on a roof, Joshua 2:6 out of a pit, Genesis 37:28 to lead up, to take up, 1 Samuel 2:19, 8:8 2 Samuel 2:3, 6:15 2 Kings 17:36 הֶעֱלָה אֶת־הַנֵּרוֹת he put lamps on the candlestick, Exodus 25:37. Constr. followed by an acc., once followed by לְ Ezekiel 26:3. Specially to put a sacrifice on the altar, to offer, Isaiah 57:6 הֶעֱלָת עֹלוֹת to offer a burnt offering, Leviticus 14:20; Job 1:5.

(2) to take up, Psalms 102:25.

(3) to bring up into an account, 1 Kings 9:21.

Hithpael, to lift up oneself, Jeremiah 51:3.
