Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?

This is what the Lord says: "As a shepherd rescues from the lion's mouth only two leg bones or a piece of an ear, so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued, with only the head of a bed and a piece of fabric from a couch."

When they had stripped the land clean, I cried out, "Sovereign Lord , forgive! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!"

So the Lord relented. "This will not happen," the Lord said.

Then I cried out, "Sovereign Lord , I beg you, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!"

So the Lord relented. "This will not happen either," the Sovereign Lord said.

I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said: "Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds shake. Bring them down on the heads of all the people; those who are left I will kill with the sword. Not one will get away, none will escape.

so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name," declares the Lord , who will do these things.

You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.

Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been.

The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish."

So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"

This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the Lord , because he had already told them so.)

The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"

Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish."

But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered.

When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, "It would be better for me to die than to live."

But God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?" "It is," he said. "And I'm so angry I wish I were dead."

Many nations will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord , to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths." The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.
