So Judas took a detachment of soldiers and some officers from the high priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.Matthew 26:47; Mark 14:43; Luke 22:47; Acts 1:16;">[xr]

So he asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus from Nazareth."Jesus the Nazarene; the Gk. Nazoraios may be a word play between Heb. netser, meaning branch (see Isaiah 11:1), and the name">[fn]

Jesus replied, "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."

Peter, however, stood outside the gate. So this other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter inside.Matthew 26:69; Mark 14:66; Luke 22:54;">[xr]

So Pilate came out to them and said, "What accusation are you bringing against this man?"

So Pilate went back into the governor's headquarters,into the praetorium">[fn] summoned Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"Matthew 27:11;">[xr]

Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born for this, and I came into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."John 8:47; 1 John 3:19; 4:6;">[xr]

So Pilate said to him, "Aren't you going to speak to me? You realize, don't you, that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?"

So they said to each other, "Let's not tear it. Instead, let's throw dice to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture that says,Psalm 22:18;">[xr] "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they threw dice."Psalm 22:18">[fn] So that is what the soldiers did.

A jar of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth.Matthew 27:48;">[xr]

Since it was the Preparation Day, the Jews did not want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath, for that was a particularly important Sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the men's legs broken and the bodiesthe bodies">[fn] removed.Deuteronomy 21:23; Mark 15:42; John 19:42;">[xr]

So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with him.

The one who saw this has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows he is telling the truth so that you, too, may believe.

So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"John 13:23; 19:26;">[xr]
