Once there were seven brothers who lived here. The first one married, but died without having any children. So his wife was left to his brother.

One of them was an expert in the Jewish Law. So he tried to test Jesus by asking,

So obey everything they teach you, but don't do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else.

You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You travel over land and sea to win one follower. And when you have done so, you make that person twice as fit for hell as you are.

So keep on doing everything they did.

So when you see all these things happening, you will know that the time has almost come.

So be on your guard! You don't know when your Lord will come.

So, my disciples, always be ready! You don't know the day or the time when all this will happen.

The man knew what each servant could do. So he handed five thousand coins to the first servant, two thousand to the second, and one thousand to the third. Then he left the country.

You could have at least put my money in the bank, so that I could have earned interest on it."

This is my blood, and with it God makes his agreement with you. It will be poured out, so that many people will have their sins forgiven.

and he said to them, "I am so sad that I feel as if I am dying. Stay here and keep awake with me."

He came back and found his disciples sleeping. So he said to Peter, "Can't any of you stay awake with me for just one hour?

But all this happened, so that what the prophets wrote would come true." All of Jesus' disciples left him and ran away.

The chief priests and the whole council wanted to put Jesus to death. So they tried to find some people who would tell lies about him in court.

But Jesus did not answer. So the high priest said, "With the living God looking on, you must tell the truth. Tell us, are you the Messiah, the Son of God?"

and said, "You think you are the Messiah! So tell us who hit you!"

But in front of everyone Peter said, "That isn't so! I don't know what you are talking about!"

and said, "I have sinned by betraying a man who has never done anything wrong." "So what? That's your problem," they replied.

So the words of the prophet Jeremiah came true, "They took the thirty silver coins, the price of a person among the people of Israel.
